Jacquelyn Stephens – ‘Bio Bloom Ultra-Violet’

Starting bid: $300.00

‘Bio-Bloom Ultra-Violet’ continues in my fascination with the minutiae of life and aquatic themes. It belongs to my ‘Bio Bloom’ Series exploring the sublime beauty of microscopic life and the natural world as I am deeply inspired by the nature and the forces that shape it. All the tiny fragments of the universe and patterns of life. Cellular forms, fluid, skins, body forms, minuscule plant growth and of course I can never escape the Oceans pull on me. I grew in and by the sea. Bioluminescent organisms, magnificent corals, seaweeds, shell forms and all manner of sea creatures from my memories of Snorkelling around the back beach at Flinders. All these things I think about and look at when I am creating these paintings.

Although the images allude to real things like pulsating atoms and cellular forms, these suggestions exist only to act as a memory triggers for connections that reference our place in the beautiful but fragile natural world.

Description

Jacquelyn Stephens is a Melbourne based artist who has been exhibiting her paintings for over 20 years since completing a BFA in Painting at the Victorian College of the Arts. Many of the key themes in her work have been informed by her interest in water, nature, science and the domain of medicine.

Stephens’s paintings are inspired by a sublime of the small and examine the life forces and colour energies inherent in all things microscopic, sub-atomic and aquatic. She abstracts the miniscule patterns of life, cellular and molecular formations, and enlarges them into paintings where illusionary forms gather and float in fields of obscure space.

Microscopic views, particle physics, pulsating atoms, cell growth, amoebas and of course she can never escape the otherworldliness of underwater life growing up by the sea at Flinders.

Bioluminescent organisms, coral reefs, urchins, seaweeds and as many different life forms as your imagination can conjure are reflections from years of Snorkelling around her local rock pools.

Ultimately the paintings are about our sense of awe and wonder at these miraculous building blocks of life. Fields of organic forms in arrangements that reflect the natural minuscule patterns of the universe and relate to a kind of topography of our own souls. The hope is that the paintings trigger an uplifting, contemplative experience for the viewer that reminds us of the beauty and of our relationship to the fragile natural world.
